Last Minute Trips Abroad
Last Minute Booking Anxiety?
Never Fear! Woo Sah. Deep Breath.
You never know when you are going to get hit with a last minute trip across the globe. For some, it's a way of life. For others, an often occurrence. For many, a far fetched blue moon. No matter your situation, don't count yourself out! Preparation is Key, and "Luck is the intersection between preparation and opportunity.." Besides, who doesn't want to peek into another way of existing outside of their own? The world is vast, beautiful, complex, and ever changing.
A week ago, I booked a last minute shoot in the beautiful Czech Republic (I will share more of this experience soon). I had a very short amount of time to "get my life together" and make sure I had everything set in place and packed for the smoothest travel possible. We all want to be able to enjoy ourselves instead of stress in the midst of travel, even if its in a hurry. Here is my quick checklist for you on your next international zip-away.
1. VALID PASSPORT:
It is no secret that the percentage of Americans that own passports is far less than that of those who do. It is the first step toward exploring the large world around us, and a necessary one. Don't forget that your passport Must Be Valid at least 6 Months after your time of return, for your fast approaching trip. For information on how to get this party started: travel.state.gov
2. Inform Necessary Parties:
Getting denied money, or the ability to make a purchase while in another country, or in the midst of fast paced airport travel is never fun. Be sure to inform your Bank of the Countries that you will be visiting so that you have access. Pay attention to conversion fees as they vary according to country.
Your Phone Carrier
Each phone carrier has different travel plans, and each plan has different travel options. If you forget to make these settings before taking off, it can cost you "an arm and a leg." I pleasantly came to find that my carrier had a plan for only $10/day that enabled me to use my phone in its entirety as I use it in the U.S. Be sure to not miss out on special deals that will save you!
The State Dept.
You never know what can happen while your traveling abroad. You always want to make sure that your country has the ability to protect you if need be. As soon as you receive your booked travel information, register online with the U.S. STEP Enrollment Program here (US Citizens only): https://step.state.gov/step/
Someone You Trust
As we all know, its important for someone to know where we will be during our travels. "Just in case" something happens, or if you need someone to"hold it down" while you're away.
Be sure to check the Weather, and pack accordingly. Grab a bathing suit, just in case your hotel has a hot tub. Don't Forget your underwear!! Set aside some comfy travel clothes, because its going to be a long one!
Cheers to mind expansion!
5. Travel Pack/Purse
Bring a small pack that is easily accessible, can be worn across your body (no one like's a pocket picking), and can fit your money/camera/sanitizer/etc.
6. Charger Converter
Plugs vary according to country. Find a universal converter that will work in your destination according to your needs. Don't ruin your products by taking this one lightly. While you're rushing.. Don't forget your Charger! ** PORTABLE CHARGERS** are a huge help!
For a flight of this length, you'll want to be able to listen to your tunes, or at least catch up on your movies! Don't forget that most planes don't have bluetooth, so bring something that can be plugged in, for preferred quality of sound.
Most airlines will provide a complimentary baby pillow and thin blanket. If for any reason you get stuck in a middle seat (Which can be likely on a massive international plane) you'll want to have a good neck pillow! If you're always cold like me, a good mobile comfy blanket always comes in handy.
Smart phones are the best, as your camera is in your pocket (make sure you charge up)! However, if you have something small, mobile, and high quality to capture the essence of your adventure, throw it securely in the bag!
